variegated geranium plants. Variegated means that not all of the leaf is green. The variegated geranium leaves you will be using have a white border that lacks the pigments found in chloroplasts. A piece of foil has been shielding a portion of the leaf for some time, preventing the underlying cells from receiving light. Click to Play!

To start off the lab: 1) Gather all necessary materials to the table 2) Cut out 10 disks (for each trial, which is twice, for the CO2 and without) of baby spinach by using the straw. 3) Put disk in the plastic syringe then push all air out. Then use the syringe to draw in soapy water solution. Click to Play!

Spinach Photosynthesis Lab - AP-Biology Final Project

Lab 4 Plant Pigments & Photosynthesis Introduction: The purpose of this lab experiment was to separate plant pigments using paper chromatography, and to measure the rate of photosynthesis in isolated chloroplasts. Because of capillary action the solvent moves up the paper causing the pigments to become visible at certain distances.
As photosynthesis occurs oxygen gas is produced and as this is made in the deflated spinach leaves they are then inflated to float to the top of the beaker. C. Errors of this lab include improper deflation of the spinach leaves, improper ratio of soap and water, correct amount of baking soda.
The beaker without the CO2 didn't have any spinach circles rise, showing that those spinach circles didn't undergo photosynthesis. This means that the spinach in the CO2 beaker did undergo photosynthesis because they produced oxygen to make themselves rise. The CO2 beaker did have an increase in the rate of photosynthesis over the non CO2 beaker.

Photosynthesis Lab Review - Biology 111L Lab Manual - Clayton State University Spinach leaf photosynthesis lab answers

In this lab, a spectrophotometer was used to measure the level of light transmitted in the chloroplasts of spinach leaves. Chloroplasts from spinach leaves were taken and put into tubes so one can understand the rate of photosynthesis in spinach cells at different light intensities. In this lab, a dye reduction technique was used.
Photosynthesis Lab. Use the metal hole punch to cut out 20 circular disks from the fresh spinach leaves, 10 for a control and 10 for a treatment. Separate the two parts of the syringe, drop 10 of the spinach disks inside, reassemble the syringe. Push the plunger almost to the bottom but don't crush the disks.
Photosynthesis Lab Walkthrough Mr. Andersen shows you how to sink leaf chads in preparation for the AP Biology photosynthesis lab. An empty syringe is used to remove gas from the leaves before the lab.

Photosynthesis

AP Biology investigation on photosynthesis includes background information and instructions for using spinach leaf disks, light, and baking soda to measure the rate of photosynthesis. Specific instructions are included for measuring the rate of photosynthesis in relation to light and carbon availability.
AP Biology Lab 4: Plant Pigments and Photosynthesis. He then explains how you can measure the rate of photosynthesis using leaf chads and water containing baking soda.. Floating Leaf Disks.

This lab tested the ability of plant cells to carry out photosynthesis in varying intensities of spinach leaf photosynthesis lab answers />One dish of leaf disks was placed in the dark, one dish under the room lights, and one dish 25 cm from a light source.
To measure photosynthetic activity, leaf disks were cut from spinach leaves and the oxygen stored in the leaves was removed by applying a vacuum.
This caused the leaves to sink to the bottom of the flask.
Leaf disks that sunk to spinach leaf photosynthesis lab answers bottom of the flask were transferred to petri dishes containing bicarbonate.
When exposed to adequate light, photosynthesis occurred in the leaf disks.
The leaf disks used bicarbonate as a source of carbon dioxide for photosynthesis and produced oxygen as a bi-product.
Oxygen production, and thus photosynthesis, was indicated by floating leaf disks.
Hypothesis: The greater the light intensity, the greater the rate of photosynthesis and the greater the production of oxygen by plant leaf disks.

Part one of our lab showed that spinach leaves placed in the NaHCO3 solution respired faster than in the H2O, and overall the disks in the water did not respire at all. Taking a look at the reactants of photosynthesis, this lack of respiration is obvious. Water does not contain the necessary CO2 for this life process to occur.
